What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

Tire pressure sensors often use a battery, and a flashing tire pressure light can often be a sign that the battery needs to be replaced. This could also be because of an issue with a sensor. If you notice a flashing Tire Pressure light, you’ll want to schedule a service appointment at our service center so we can properly diagnose the problem and get you safely back on Decatur roads.

What is the Recommended Tire Pressure?

Tire pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, or “PSI” — a measure of how much force there is in a certain area. But what is the recommended tire pressure? The recommended tire pressure for most vehicles is between 30-35 PSI. Still, the ideal pressure for your particular vehicle will vary based on what tires you use and the class of vehicle you drive. Often, vehicles with larger wheels and lower-profile tires must have a higher recommended tire pressure to compensate. Traditionally, when off-roading, you have to let air out of your tires, so the recommended tire pressure also varies based on the driving activities being performed. Why Your Tire Pressure Light is On: How Your Tire Sensor Works

Your vehicle’s tire sensor that sets off the tire pressure light might be different from your neighbor’s. There are two main systems used today: Direct TPMS and Indirect TPMS.

  • Direct TPMS is what it sounds like: a direct measure of your tires’ pressures using a tire sensor. When it senses your tire(s) have lost 25% or more of their air pressure, it sends a signal to the car’s computer and activates the TPMS light on your dash.
  • Indirect TPMS is a bit different. Rather than measure the pressure with a tire sensor, it measures something impacted by your tire pressure. Your car’s antilock braking system (ABS) can sense how fast your tires are spinning. If the pressure in a tire is low, it rolls at a different speed and alerts your vehicle computer.

How to Reset Your TPMS Light

Most times your TPMS light goes on, you’ll very likely want to take it into a local service center like ours, where trained technicians have the advanced equipment needed to diagnose and repair all aspects of your Chevrolet vehicle, including tire issues. But if you’re looking learn how to reset your TPMS light yourself, here’s what to do:

  • First, try to fill up your tires with air and see if the TPMS light goes off. If not, drive around for 5-10 minutes. Turn your car off and then on again. This should automatically reset the TPMS light.
  • If none of the above works, it’s time to take your car to the professionals here at Leman's Chevrolet City.

Additional Tips for Resetting Your Tire Pressure Light

Once your tires are properly inflated, the tire pressure light should turn off, however, if it remains on, there are a few additional steps you can take to turn it off:

  • Inflate all tires to 3 PSI over their recommended amount, then deflate them completely. Be sure to include the spare tire, as it may have a sensor as well. Once they’re all deflated, reinflate to the recommended tire pressure.
  • With the vehicle off, disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the car on and honk the horn for about three seconds. This will discharge any power still stored in the vehicle. Then reconnect the battery.
