Why Your Tire Pressure Light Is On: How Your Tire Sensor Works

There are different reasons why you might see a flashing tire pressure light when driving around Springfield. Your vehicle’s tire sensor that sets off the tire pressure light might be different from your other vehicles. There are two main systems used today: Direct TPMS and Indirect TPMS.

• Direct TPMS is what it sounds like: a direct measure of your tires’ pressures using a tire sensor. When it senses your tire(s) have lost 25% or more of their air pressure, it sends a signal to the car’s computer and activates the TPMS light on your dash.
• Indirect TPMS is a bit different. Rather than measure the pressure with a tire sensor, it measures something impacted by your tire pressure. How to Reset Your Tire Pressure Light: Step by Step

Most times that your TPMS light goes on, you’ll very likely want to take it to a local service center like ours, where trained technicians have the advanced equipment needed to diagnose and repair all aspects of your Chevrolet vehicle, including tire issues. But, if you’re looking to learn how to reset your TPMS light yourself, here are some different things you can do:

• First, try to fill up your tires with air and see if the TPMS light goes off. If not, drive around for 5-10 minutes at a minimum of 50 MPH.
• Turn your car off, and then turn the key to the “On” position without starting the car. Hold down the TPMS reset button until you see the tire pressure light blink three times. Then, release the button. Consult your owner’s manual if you have trouble finding the reset button. Start up the car, and wait about 20 minutes. This should give the sensor plenty of time to refresh.
• Turn your car off, and disconnect the positive battery cable using a wrench. Turn on your car, and honk the horn for about three seconds. This will get rid of any power that may still be stored inside your car. Afterward, reconnect the battery.
• Inflate all of your tires to 3 PSI over the recommended amount. Then, deflate all of the tires. Don’t forget to include the spare tire. Afterward, reinflate all of the tires to the recommended pressure amount.
